First Class Research

Potsdam is a city of science. More than 10,000 of the 160,000 citizens of Potsdam work in scientific institutions of the Brandenburg State capital. In no other city in Germany are there more scientists per capital than in Potsdam.

There are more than 40 scientific institutions located in the region: Max Plank Institute, Frauenhofer Institute, institutions of the Leibniz Society and two institutions of the Helmholtz Society. The Hasso Plattner Institute of Software Systems Engineering (HPI), founded in 1998, is the first and thus far only university institute in Germany that is completely privately financed.

Since 2009 Potsdam is also the location of the IASS - Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, a leading institute for climate research and sustainability studies
