A strong service industry and a creative populace form the economic backbone of the state capital Potsdam. The economy is characterized by a variety of small, but at the same time, highly specialized and successful companies. More than 90% of employees work in the service sector which also includes the high-tech industries in Potsdam. Economic, scientific and technical services have 20% of employees, the largest, and most important share. The focus is also on health and social services as well as education. All in all there are about 10,000 service companies with almost 70,000 employees subject to social security insurance contributions in Potsdam.
As a state capital, Potsdam is the seat of the Brandenburg state government as well as many ministries and state institutions, professional associations, organizations and courts. Accordingly, the areas of public administration and public services are highly developed.
As a modern work, service and administrative center, but also as a center of trade, education, health, culture and tourism, Potsdam serves as a hub for the state and the surrounding region.
