The New Palace is the biggest building in Sanssouci Park. It was built from 1763 to 1769 in accordance with the plans of Johann Gottfried Brühning, Heinrich Ludwig Manger, and Carl of Gontard at the west end of the main avenue of Sanssouci Park at the request of Frederick II. The huge palace with a high tambour dome served Frederick II especially as a representation and guest palace. He almost never lived there.

About 60 of the 200 palace rooms can be visited, including the grotto hall, marble gallery and the guest apartments. The palace theater is located in the south wing of the New Palace, and today still functions as a performance venue.
