Life Science and Health Management

The capital region of Berlin-Brandenburg is one of the leading Life Science locations in Europe. 220 biotech, medical engineering as well as 30 pharmaceutical companies are located there. All in all there are more than 25,000 cutting edge jobs in the Life Science industry in the capital region. The concentration of more than 25 big research institutions and universities which focus on Life Science research in such a small area is unique in Europe. Companies find outstanding potential for development and cooperation within short distances. Due to this scientific environment there are numerous companies and networks founded in the industry. About 3,000 graduates in Life Sciences and related specialties come out of universities in Berlin and Brandenburg each year. That is why there is an excellent pool of qualified professionals and young scientists here.

Life Science and biotechnology are concentrated in two locations in Potsdam: The Science Park Potsdam in the district Golm and the BioTechCampus on the peninsula Hermannswerder. Thirty companies work at these two locations, and spread over the whole city there are 50 that deal with Life Science topics and products. The target groups and focus of companies in Potsdam are in the fields of biological analyses and diagnostics, agrobiotechnology, regenerative medicine and medical technology as well as pharmaceutical development and production. Numerous and excellent science and research institutions in Potsdam and its environs are the inspiration and engine for these companies.

The high concentration of well-known research institutions, innovative companies and medical care facilities make Potsdam simultaneously into a center for  health and health care services. More than 500 practicing doctors and just as many healthcare providers ensure very good outpatient treatment. Five clinics for inpatient treatment are located in Potsdam in which more than 50,000 patients are treated every year. The biggest hospital in Potsdam is the Ernst von Bergmann Hospital.
